RHS Read-a-thon: Feb 1-29

The 2016 Randolph Heights Read-a-thon is underway!Reading-Books

Reading is such an important part of our students’ success. This month, the PTA has partnered with our RHS teachers and staff to encourage students to develop a love of reading while helping to enhance classroom collections of Core Knowledge books and artifacts.

During February (“I Love to Read” month) all students are encouraged to read daily outside of school and collect pledges from family and friends for minutes read. Prizes will be awarded for participation and money earned. All pledges collected will be used to purchase books and materials for Core Knowledge classroom collections!

Becoming a “reading hero” is as easy as 1-2-3!

1.) Set a Daily Reading Goal: Each student sets a goal for how many minutes s/he will read at home each day during February. Time spent listening to an adult read also counts toward students’ goals!

  • Kindergarten & 1st grade: 10 minutes each day
  • 2nd & 3rd grade: 20 minutes each day
  • 4th & 5th grade: 30 minutes each day

As a school, we’re aiming to reach our goal of 200,000 minutes read by the end of the month! Students can keep watch on the Read-a-thon Tracker in the cafeteria to check our progress.

2.) Track Daily Reading & Submit Weekly Minutes: Track minutes read at home each day using the Read-a-thon Calendar. Turn in the Weekly Minutes Record to the bag in your classroom at the start of each week.

All students who participate in the Read-a-thon by tracking their minutes read will be eligible to participate in weekly drawings throughout the month (regardless of whether or not they collect any pledges).

3.) Get Supporters & Collect Pledges: Each student is encouraged to find supporters — parents, grandparents, other relatives, friends, etc. — who will show support of the student’s reading goals by making a pledge, which can be based on minutes read or be a one-time donation. (See the Read-a-thon Pledge Sheet for sample pledges.) Any checks should be made out to Randolph Heights PTA. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Students should collect the money pledged and return the completed Read-a-thon Calendar along with the money by Monday, March 7.

Big Hero 6 FriendsHelp us celebrate February 25!

Join us on Thursday, February 25, 5:45-8:00pm to celebrate all our reading heroes with a showing of Disney’s Big Hero 6. The movie is FREE for all families and we’ll have concessions for sale to keep those tummies from rumbling.
